Sex that's twice as good, love that's three times stronger.

When Jodi returned to Burlington after a nasty divorce, broke and without a much needed place to sculpt, she never expected to bump into Paxton, her best friend from growing up. With her unresolved feelings for him still smoldering, it was a shock to find him married—to a great guy. But when Paxton and Nicholas offer her a room for rent in their too-big, too-expensive Victorian, complete with a turret to use as her art studio, it seems like the perfect solution for everyone. Until Jodi overhears Nicholas and Paxton making love—and finds herself burning hotter than she ever imagined.

Nicholas always knew his husband Paxton was bisexual, but finding his forgotten stash of cheerleader DVDs makes him wonder if Paxton's been tamping down his old desires. As strong as their love is, he knows there are things he just can't give Paxton...or can he? He decides to get Paxton a very special birthday present—a night with a woman—a no-strings arrangement to grant him the fantasies Nicholas isn't equipped to fulfill. But when he meets Paxton's best friend Jodi, Nicholas finds himself facing new feelings of his own. If only he could stop imagining Jodi's body wedged between Paxton and him and figure out what to do...

Reader note contains m/m/f ménage and hot romance elements including male/male love

My Review:
I was recently requested to review Polished by Alyssa Turner. I enjoyed it so much, I decided to pick up one of her other m/m/f menage books and this is the one that captured my attention. I liked it. It was an interesting dynamic since the guys are married to each other. One of them, Paxton, is bisexual and the other, Nicholas, is gay. Nicholas worries that Paxton is missing something from their relationship and thinks that maybe a menage will help prevent that possibility. They're guys. They've had menages in the past with other men. For them, they can separate sex from emotion so it's not that big of a deal...at least in theory because the third would be a one-night, no emotions involved, type of thing.

And then Jodi enters their lives. Jodi and Paxton were best friends ten years ago. There were unresolved emotions there and when she comes back to town, they reconnect. She's struggling. Nicholas just lost his job. So the obvious solution is that she come into their home and rent from them. The menage plan never is even on the table with her, but they're all living together. Emotions become entangled. And surprise of surprises...Nicholas and Jodi become really good friends and he begins to develop some sexual interest in her.

This is the first time I think I've ever read this twist in sexuality. Gay-for-you is a common theme in m/m books, but this is the first time I've ever read a hetero-for-you story and I liked it. It was such a great and believable twist. At first, I wasn't sure, but if I can believe the gay-for-you stories then it makes complete sense that it can go the other direction too.

It was a great premise and a hot little story. It's not very long, but I found it to be a very entertaining read.

not much of a storyline to it. but steamy in places. wasnt hectic. expected more. thougt it would be better
Alyssa Turner is an excellent storyteller, giving just enough suspense to the story to let the reader heat up with the characters. I found By Surprise to be a welcome story and a good turn on in the MMF romance genera.
A very steamy read. Engaging from the beginning and holds your attention the whole way through. It is a definite recommended read.
It's a good read, interesting and heart felt. I'm often let down by the inexpensive novels but this was written as well as any $8 book I've purchased. Sweet characters, would have enjoyed more of their story )
Unusual twist, two men in love, living in a beautiful home, welcome in an old friend to help cover expenses. As a birthday gift, Nicholas wants his lover Paxton to have a woman, what he didn't expect was how well she fit in their life and in their bed! Hot m/m action and m/f/m lovin's!
A short, sweet story. Paxton , Nicholas and Jodi were a likely triad. Paxton and Jodi were childhood friends. Jodi made a unwise choice, than left Paxton. Paxton moved forward with Nicholas. One stop brings Jodi back to Paxton. . The works should have explored the characters more in depth and circumstances of a triad relationship. Would like to know what happens in the future. Did Nicholas go back to his job or find work in his hobby?. Did Jodi ever see her cruel ex again?. Would read from author again.
I would consider myself a connoisseurs of all things m/m/f and this isn't my first story by Turner. 'Polished' left me curious enough to read another of her stories. As with that story, I found things with this one that didn't really work for me. Maybe because it's only 77 pages and there wasn't time to develop the characters. Gay Nicholas and bi-sexual Paxton are happily married. Nicholas has just lost his job as a counselor and cop Paxton's already working overtime and doubles so money is very tight in that household. Paxton running into Jodi, his best friend from high school seems like a lifesaver because she's looking for a place to stay and the guys have a room to rent - perfect solution. A little too perfect.

Soon after moving in Jodi overhears the guys having sex, probably because they left the door open but hey who doesn't do that. So typical of m/m/f when the heroine can't help being turned on hearing the grunts, groans and noises of two dudes getting it on - Jodi follows suit and immediately gets turned on and wants to be the filling in their sandwich. I'm honest to goodness just fed up with that. Then there's gay Nicholas who has never been attracted to a woman all of a sudden deciding that he's going to give his husband a present - a night with a woman - and then deciding that Jodi would be that woman. I really didn't understand that at all because these two guys had already had threesomes with other males so why now all of a sudden a woman? Because you don't have girl parts? He already knew that and still married you so what's the real motivation here.

Then Nicholas feelings for Jodi develop over a couple of days/weeks. I didn't see them falling in love. I saw them becoming friends. I had a hard time buying into the sexual attraction from Nicholas to Jodi and definitely from Jodi to Nicholas. Nicholas and Paxton had a few conversations about Paxton's previous relationship with Jodi. But I didn't understand how they stopped being friends and how Jodi's ex-husband's involvement in her life really changed their supposed friendship. I got the feeling that Jodi was some kind of rebel in her younger teenage years - drinking, smoking, all those kinds of things that kids do thinking they're so original when it's the exact opposite. Off my soapbox now.

I didn't care of any of these three characters. Their romance came off forced, flat and forgettable. There was sex but not anything outstanding - the saving grace was that there was no BDSM. Thank goodness! This book was a meh for me.

Happy Reading Folks!
